Gertrude describes her love for Hamlet when she asks him not to return to Wittenberg. When she shares with Ophelia the hope that the young woman had married hers, she divulges her wish for happiness to him.

Gertrude is the mother of Hamlet and Queen of Denmark. She was married to the murdered King Hamlet portrayed by the Ghost in the play and later married her brother Claudius. Her close relationships with the central male characters mean that she is a key figure within the narrative. Hamlet delays the murder of Claudius because Claudius represents Hamlet's innermost wishes to sleep with his mother Gertrude. Ofelia is the daughter of Polonius and the sister of Laertes. Hamlet has been in love with her for a while before the play begins and has given her various gifts during her courtship until her father warns her to stay away from him and tells her not to see him again.
