Chapter 21, the first of numerous chapters that make up the third scaffold scene, is where The Scarlet Letter reaches its Climax.
The captain of the Bristol bound ship informs Hester that Roger Chillingworth will be sailing to Europe with them. Beginning in Chapter 21, the third scaffold scene spans several chapters and ultimately leads to the book's Climax. A chapters see the return of Hawthorne's main characters, and in these few pages, he shows the key battles in the open air and in a very public place. One of the first subjects brought up is the difference between behaving in public and private. People "compressed whatever mirth and public joy they deemed allowable to human infirmity" for the duration of one holiday, "thereby so far dispelling the customary cloud, that, for the duration of one holiday, they appeared scarcely more grave than most other communities at a period of general affliction." Even Hester is a stand-alone example of the contrast between her inner joy and the drab Puritan way of life.
