With a 10 km diameter, an asteroid is so large that it is quite difficult to slow it down. It will not be significantly slowed down by air friction, unlike smaller meteors. It will cut through the air as if it weren't even there. It won't matter if it hits the water or land when it smacks the surface since it will be hitting so forcefully.

Finally, the asteroid will be stopped by its impact with the crust of the earth. A crater more than 100 kilometers big will be formed when the asteroid and a significant portion of the Earth's crust are vaporized by the impact's energy, which will also launch all that rock into the atmosphere.

A portion of this debris will be traveling at such high speeds that it will pass straight through the Earth's atmosphere and into orbit around the planet. The majority of the debris will fall back to Earth, covering the entire planet, not just the area near the impact site. This will cause the atmosphere to heat up to the temperature of an oven, igniting forest fires, and burning anything that isn't buried.

For almost a year, the Earth's atmosphere will be filled with a mixture of dust from the impact and smoke from the forest fires, obstructing the Sun's light. A large portion of the land and marine plant life on Earth will perish without sunshine.

Many animal species will go extinct owing to a shortage of food and the general destruction of the ecosystem, either in the immediate aftermath of the catastrophe or in the years that follow, including the human race if we are not both fortunate and resourceful.

The last time this occurred was 65 million years ago, when an asteroid hit the planet and the dinosaurs went extinct, leaving behind the Chicxulub Crater in Mexico.
