There are even contests held annually to determine who can ride the wave for the longest at Pororoca, a well-known surfing location. The term "tidal bore surfing" is another name for this phenomena. A tidal bore called Pororoca develops at the Amazon River's mouth. This happens when high tide from the Atlantic Ocean enters the river and forms a wave. Strong enough to be surfed, this wave can grow to a height of up to 10 feet (3 meters).
