When assessing another person's actions, people often stress personal traits while ignoring contextual considerations. This is known as the fundamental attribution fallacy. We tend to believe that others do bad things because they are bad people because of the fundamental attribution error. We have the propensity to ignore external circumstances that might have been relevant.
In one study, for example, when something bad happened to someone else, subjects 65% of the time blamed it on that person's behavior or personality. However, when something bad happened to the subjects, they blamed themselves only 44% of the time, blaming their circumstances much more frequently.
Therefore, the fundamental attribution mistake explains why we frequently pass harsh judgment on others while also absolving ourselves of responsibility by rationalizing our own unethical behavior.
