The Dawes Act was the law which authorized the President of the United States to survey and divide a reservation land, which was held in common by the members of a tribe, into small allotments to be given out to individuals. So, Native Americans registering on a tribal group were granted allotments of the reservation land. And for those who accepted the allocations and lived separately from the tribes were granted US citizenship.

The Dawes Act also known as the General Allotment Act. The Dawes Act was directly responsible for the loss of 90 million acres of Native American land, effectively abolishing tribal self-governance and forcing assimilation.
