The most typical produced element is the erythrocyte, also called a red blood cell (or RBC): There are millions of erythrocytes in a single drop of blood but only a few thousand leukocytes. Males and females have roughly 5.4 million and 4.8 million erythrocytes per microliter (L) of blood, respectively they are bi concave disc shaped. In actuality, erythrocytes are thought to account for around 25% of all body cells. They are quite tiny cells, as one might expect, with a mean diameter of only 7-8 micrometers (m) (Figure 1). The main jobs of erythrocytes are to transport the breathed oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and to collect up some of the waste carbon dioxide (approximately 24 percent).
