Dennis Higgins Bonnen, an American businessman and politician, was born on March 3, 1972. From 2019 to 2021, Bonnen presided over the Texas House of Representatives. From 1997 to 2021, Bonnen, a Republican, served as the Texas House representative for District 25. In 2013, Joe Straus, the Speaker at the time, named Bonnen as Speaker Pro Tempore, who presided over the House while the Speaker was away. 2019 saw the election of Bonnen as Speaker. In 2020, he did not run for reelection.
American politician Joseph Richard Straus III was the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives from 2009 to 2019. He was born on September 1st, 1959.He was a Republican who served as the representative for District 121, which includes parts of San Antonio, Texas, and numerous other municipalities in northeastern Bexar County, from his 2005 House election until his 2019 retirement. He decided not to run for the state House again in 2018.
A moderate, "business-friendly, country club Republican," Straus occasionally ran afoul of the party's social conservative faction during his tenure in the Texas House. At the end of his five terms as speaker, Straus was opposed by more conservative elements of the Texas Republican Party, including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who thought Straus was not sufficiently conservative. Another conservative group also attempted to unseat Straus and his allies in Republican primary elections by spending millions of dollars.
As a supporter of senator John Tower, who was recognized in part for his resistance to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Straus began his political career.
