Scavengers play a critical role in the food web. They keep the bodies of dead animals, or carrion, out of the ecosystem. Scavengers break down this organic material and recycle it as nutrients back into the ecosystem.
Scavengers are some birds. Vultures only consume the carcasses of dead animals.
Scavengers are some mammals. Hyenas are commonly thought of as scavengers, but they are also carnivores.
