Cells are the basic structural and functional units of all the living organisms. They are the building blocks of life, and they make up the tissues and organs of the body. Cells are composed of a variety of components, including a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, and various organelles, such as mitochondria and lysosomes. Cells are responsible for all of the activities that keep us alive, including respiration, digestion, and reproduction.
Cells that are part of the immune system are able to rapidly divide in order to produce more copies of themselves to fight off infection. Other cells, such as nerve cells, do not divide once they are formed, as they are not able to regenerate and must stay in place to transmit signals. The environment a cell is in also plays a role in how quickly it divides; cells in a nutrient-rich environment are more likely to divide quickly.
