What are blood groups?
The presence or lack of two antigens, A and B, on the surface of red blood cells results in one of four major blood types. The eight most frequent blood types are A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, AB-. In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a protein called the Rh factor, which can be either present (+) or missing (-).
For a transfusion to be safe, blood types must be matched in extremely precise ways. With the appropriate blood transfusion, life or death can be decided.
Additionally, Rh-positive or Rh-negative blood may be provided to Rh-positive patients, while Rh-negative blood is given to Rh-negative people. For plasma, the rules are the opposite.
Hence, 1/4 will by AB, type AB blood; 1/4 will be AO, or type A Blood; 1/4 will be BO, or type B blood; 1/4 will be OO, type O Blood.
