It is not true there must be no forces acting on an object that moves in a straight line at a constant speed. All forces act on an object in balanced.

If an object moves in a straight line at a constant speed it means the object has uniform motion. According to Newton's first law if the forces that act on an object in balanced (∑F = 0) so there are two condition

  • If the object is at rest, it will stay at rest.
  • If the object is in motion, it will stay in motion with a constant speed in a straight line.

So there must be forces acting on an object. But, all forces work in balanced.
