What are ligands?

The term ligands has to do with a substance that can be able to attract a metal ion or a metal atom. It is therefore common to see that a ligand would have a lone pair of electrons or a negative charge that can be used to attract the metal atom or the metal ion.

We can see so many example of the ligands that can be found in the biological systems as well as the ligands that can be able to combine with metal ions in the area of coordination chemistry as we know.

We can now see that the ligands are neutral molecules or sometimes  negatively charged ions.

The negative charge as have been said before are used in the process of binding.
