There are several types of surfactants, to name two: alkylbenzene sulfonates  or detergents; and lauryl sulfate or foaming agents. 

Alkylbenzene sulfonates are commonly used in the production of detergent soaps, these help clean the dirt from cloths and other materials, it also produces foam. 

Lauryl sulfate or foaming agents are commonly used in the production of dishwashing liquid or handwashing soap. 

Based on their ability to lower the surface tension of a liquid or gas, surfactants are important in soap and detergent making, as well as in dyeing fabric.

What are surfactants?

Surfactants are substances which are used to reduce the surface tension of a liquid or gas.

They are also called surface-active agent.

Surfactants are used in:

  • making of soap and detergent: for example sodium lauryl sulfate is used in detergents to lower the surface tension of water.
  • they are used in dyeing to allow for the dye to penetrate the fabric more.

Therefore, surfactants are important in soap and detergent making, as well as in dyeing fabric.
