Changing female roles during the time period of the story was radical since women were viewed to be physically inactive and only did activities that were inside the house. Women entering cycling competitions was one of the very few ways that women were able to express their talents.
A Century Ride is a story written by Grace E. Denison. In the story, women, at the time, were seen as incapable of doing anything on their own and that they needed a man’s help in everything they did.
There can be many inferences about the changing female roles during that time period as follows:
• The main inference seemed to be that in this story there is one woman who is willing to prove everybody wrong by becoming the first female doctor, and a lot of people became envious of her.
• Women were considered to be too sensitive and delicate to become doctors.
• Changing roles of women were seen as radical because women were seen as physically inactive and incapable to do outdoor work.
• It was known that they could only do activities that were inside their houses.
• For example: one of the ways that women were able to express their talents was by entering cycling competitions.
The independence of women was still very rare at the time as could be seen by other people’s reactions to Maude’s behavior, but Maude’s admiration suggested that the society of the late 1800’s was beginning to value independent and strong women.
