Hi there!
Dred Scott v. Sanford was a landmark decision decided by the Supreme Court in 1857 concerning slavery and Constitutional law. The case, which upheld slavery in the South as well as expanded it to new territories of the US, was one of the major tipping points in what would eventually lead up to the civl war. In an extremely twisted case, the Supreme Court established a right to slavery - one found nowhere in the Constitution - and also declared the Missouri Compromise null. This only further angered the North and the abolitionist movement and greatly increased tensions between the two sides.
