In Canto IV, Dante is informed of how people who lived before the time of Jesus Christ are forced to spend the rest of their eternal after lives. He is told that they are stuck in limbo, and cannot be pulled from their grueling state. Dante weeps because he realizes it is unfair; those people did not have the option to follow Jesus Christ and be baptised into christianity.
