Before the Notre Dame Cathedral was built, it was a location of many religious groups. The following were built on the land that Notre Dame Cathedral now stands.

1) pagan temple
2) St. Stephen Cathedral - a large Christian Basilica with 5 naves
3) St. John the round - a baptistry

The Notre-Dane is established in the eastern parts of the Île de la Cité and actually was built on the top of two churches. Besides being famous, it was also very popular and prosperous for the reason of its size and architectural style.
