It is important that the temperature of the water is maintained in testing the surface area because as we know, when water is heated, it expands. Thus, the measured or tested surface area may be an overestimation. The same is true for the amount of water should be kept constant as well because an additional water will also cause overestimation.
Sample response: The temperature and the amount of water need to be kept the same so that the only variable that changes is surface area. If you allow the temperature and/or the amount of water to change too, you will not know which variable is causing the changes that you observe.
