Barack Obama was the first African-American ever to be elected as president and Joe Biden was the first Roman Catholic ever to be vice president.

The Presidential election of 2008 is considered historic because it was the first time that an African American candidate reached the presidency of the United States of America, as Democrat Barack Obama won against the Republican candidate John McCain.

It was also the first time that one of the two main political parties in the country supported the presidential candidacy of an African-American.
