The ocean conveyor belt moves constantly in the ocean. It is due to the thermohaline currents in the ocean.
Thermohaline: Thermo means temperature and haline means salinity.
The cold water is denser than the warm water. The cold salinity water is denser. The cold water sinks to the ocean. The warm water is less dense. It will remain on the surface.
The ocean conveyor belt starts in the Norwegian sea. Here, the warm water comes from the Gulf streams that heats the cold northern latitude atmosphere. There is a heat loss in the atmosphere which makes the water cooler. The cooler water is more denser than the warm water.
The colder water sinks. It makes space for the warm water which comes from the Gulf streams. This cold water flows south of the equator. In this way, the ocean conveyor belt constantly moves the globe.
