The pericardial cavity has a pericardial fluid, which lubricates heart and prevents it from infection.  The cavity is enclosed in a pericardial sac made up of two layers: fibrous layer and serous layer. Inside this pericardium, is the heart and its roots. In this accidental case, the heart is damaged due to breakage of the pericardium.
