Because of the history of the founding of the United States and settlers' history with
their previous homelands such as Britain where power was centralized under one ruler or monarchy, the founding fathers of the United States wanted to limit the power of any one branch or office of government. They believed this system of checks and balances would help prevent abuse of power.
