Freud would say that the child has now developed his ego. In Freud's psychological theories, the ego is the part of the personality that is capable of reasoning and planning, and can understand that food will be provided soon. This is in contrast to the id, which governs primitive drives like hunger, and the super-ego, which internalizes and enforces cultural rules.
