The United States declared its independence from British rule on July 4, 1776, through the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The principal author of the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Jefferson, although it was edited and revised by a committee consisting of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston before being finalized and approved by the Continental Congress.
