Basically, they tell them that they have to lay them off because there's no work for them anymore on the land. The drought and the sand storms devastated the land, so there was no profit, and therefore the farmers couldn't pay the owners their share. Furthermore, times have changed, and there's no sense in having many people do the manual labor on the farm when the same work can be done with a single tractor. Finally, the landowners tell the farmers to move west, to California, and look for jobs there.
