The continental edges of South America and Africa perfectly fit with one another, thereby suggesting that these two continents earlier were combined together. Also, he gave evidence of some similar fossils that are found to be present in both the continents.
This continental drift theory initially was not accepted universally as could not provide the mechanism for this drifting, but later it was replaced by the more efficient plate tectonic theory that explained the mechanism of convection current that is generated at the mantle.
