Figurative Language
Authors create vivid descriptions by using figurative language, or words and phrases that
go beyond their literal meaning. Common types of figurative language include similes,
metaphors, hyperbole, and personification. Analyzing the author's use of figurative
language can provide a better understanding of important themes and ideas in a text.
