After the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the United States entered the Great Depression to start the 1930's. The Great Depression was the worst economic depression in US history, as it resulted in financial ruin for millions of citizens. There were several different effects of this economic downturn, including:

A) Development of soup kitchens- Volunteer organizations helped to create soup kitchens that provided free meals to citizens who were poor or could not afford food.

B) Shanytowns- Shantytowns (also known as Hoovervilles) were makeshift villages in which citizens made small homes out of the materials they could find. This included cardboard boxes, scrap metal, etc. These shantytowns became prevelant all over the US.

The great depression in the United States started in the year 1929 with the Wall Street crash and this crash marked the beginning of a decade of poverty, Economic crises, Unemployment, Lost in economic growth throughout the United States. The automobile sector was also among the sectors that were hit hard from this crisis and some automobile industries even had to shut down. Banks also contributed to this period of recession as close to a thousand banks throughout the United States were closed down or suspended during this period.

During the era of Great depression, People went back to the cheapest possible standards of living which included having food from soup kitchens which used to provide free meals to anyone who came. Residents started living in shacks and the place where they used to live was called ‘Shantytowns'. The unemployment rate in the United States touched a 25% mark and the majority of jobless people were women as well as workers who belonged from the Automobile and textile industries. Age also came as a factor to find a job as people of around 20 years of age were not getting jobs due to inexperience and recession and people who lost their jobs at the age of over 45 years were unable to find new jobs because of employers had a choice of recruiting young men.
