This Supreme Court case was supposed to be a very important one, as it was supposed to show whether slavery was going to be legal or illegal throughout the states. Lets start with the outcome. The supreme court ruled that those with African descent were actually not citizens, therefore they couldn't sue in a federal court. It didn't matter if they were free or a slave.

If you've learned about the Civil War, you may know that the North was more progressive, attempting to abolish slavery since it was a violation of basic unalienable human rights, the same ones that they had fought for against the British Crown. However, the South used slaves as workers in plantations. It was an effective system for them because they didn't have to pay anyone, it was just free labor.

Therefore, using some basic reasoning, you'd see why the North would fear this choice, since it contradicted what they believed in. The South just used it to legitimatize their slavery.
