World War 1 was the biggest event for early modernist writers who didn't want to support the tradition that led to the war. They wanted to reinvent art. Einstein's theory of relativity and the great depression came much later, some would say after modernism started to slowly end. Wright Brothers' airplane flight was not as significant for modernists.
