This is operant conditioning. When Micah's parents refuse to speak to him, Micah will presumably feel insulted and take it badly. Over time, he will come to associate those bad feelings with his beliefs, or at least with verbalizing them. This will make him less likely to bring them up in the future, and he may even change his opinions.
