If the beggar could string the bow, the end result could have been?
Penelope would marry him as a reward.
Telemachus would give him his father's weapon as a reward.
Penelope would not marry him, but he would be able to live in the palace.
Telemachus would give his claim to the throne to the beggar.

This test was implemented to see which suitor would become her wife, yet none could string it. When Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, asked to try, the suitors mocked him. Yet, Penelope let him try.
