  • This is because calm and cool are coordinate adjectives in the context of this sentence. This is that each adjective modifies the noun “night”, and can be separated by a comma. One way to know if they are coordinate or cumulative adjectives, is by adding “and”. If the sentence does not lose sense by adding “and” so the adjectives are coordinate, but if the sentence loses sense the adjectives are cumulative. In the other sentences, the adjectives are cumulative this is that they are dependent to each other and cannot be separated without affecting their meaning.
