One of the first transformations was the shift from agricultural economy to one based on wages and the exchange of goods and services. The second transformation was urbanization. The cities grew as the jobs grew. The debate on slavery emerged as a giant issue. The issue on the rights of states did as well. The Second Great Awakening happened during this time. Westward expansion also occurred. A war on Mexico happened in 1846 to acquire Texas, California, and all land in between.
