Douglass must likely meant that their owner must have shown him some sort of qualities to be admired for, perhaps compassion or empathy for their slaves, but at the end of the day, no matter how respectable the person might have been, they were still a slaveowner. So even though Douglass respected his former owner as a person, he deeply disagrees with their beliefs and way of life.
