Many Byzantine monasteries were
suppressed during the reign of Leo III because of what has come to be known as
the ICON CONTROVERSY. The Emperor Leo III believed that icons encouraged
superstition and idol-worship which goes against the Ten Commandments and thus
banned the use of icons in 726 AD.
