Anti-retroviral therapy may increase ab HIV patient's life span.
What is antiretroviral therapy?
- Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the name of HIV treatment. A daily HIV treatment regimen, or combination of HIV medications, is required for ART.
- For everyone with HIV, ART is advised. HIV medications help patients with HIV live longer, better lives, even though ART cannot cure HIV. ART lowers the chance of HIV transmission as well.
- The immune system's infection-fighting CD4 cells (CD4 T lymphocytes) are attacked and destroyed by HIV. The body has a harder time fighting off infections and several cancers linked to HIV when CD4 cells are lost.
- HIV medications stop HIV from replicating, which lowers the body's level of the virus (called the viral load). The immune system has a chance to heal and create more CD4 cells when there is less HIV in the body. Although the body still contains some HIV, the immune system is powerful enough to fight off infections and several malignancies associated with HIV.
- HIV medications lower the risk of HIV transmission by lowering the body's level of HIV.
