There are many reasons why many women throughout the world work in the informal setting rather than in the formal sector. The first reason is low level of education. There is a close link between working in the informal sector and illiteracy, especially in the developing countries. Women have less capability to compete with men in capital and labour markets because they have lower level of education and skills. Another reason is that women are culturally expected to get pregnant and take the higher percentage of caring and raising the children. This normally make it hard for women to work in cooperate setting and manage the home at the same time.
Answer:
Women may not seek or be able to obtain formal sector jobs because of cultural beliefs that discourage or prohibit women from working. Women also face more workplace discrimination than men. Many women caring for young children desire only part-time work. It is often easier to find part-time, cash-only jobs in the informal sector than in the formal sector. For example, the majority of childcare workers are women. Often, childcare work is paid for in cash, unregulated by the government, and not taxed.
