Answer: d. soldiers set some straw on fire
Linlithgow Palace is a castle in Scotland, between Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle. It was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots and her son James I.
One of the stories surrounding Linlithgow Palace says that a troop of soldiers spent the night there once, after Mary and her mother had left the castle. The soldiers spread straw over the floors to sleep upon. They later set the straw on fire, which led to the destruction of the castle.
