An important aspect of Peter the great's tour of western Europe was the learning of military technologies and different Western cultures that helped him to modernize his country.
Peter the Great reigned over Russia for 31 years from 1694 till his death in 1725. He had many Europeans among his close friends, like François Lefort from Swiss or the Scottish Patrick Gordon. He was fascinated by the developed countries of Europe continent. He found that the habits of Russian were too old and wanted to reform society. It was one of the reasons that led him to visit Europe between 1696 and 1698. The other reason was the attempt to create alliances with other countries to make war on the Ottoman Empire.
During his trip, the young Russian monarch visited several countries to study how they worked. He explored libraries and galleries to understand the nuances of Western art. Besides that, he followed courses in universities but mostly worked in various companies to discover the techniques of the European navy. He went to England, to the Netherlands, and Prussia. When back to his country, he transformed the Russian industry and made his country one of the world's great powers. These reforms exist until today because they changed the fate of Russia, which was a minor and poor country before he came to the throne.
