Vasculitis is the name given to a group of numerous different diseases that have, in common, inflammation of the blood vessel wall, whether small, medium or large caliber arteries or veins. As a consequence of the inflammatory process, the walls become thicker and attract cells from the body's defense system that accumulate inside the vessel. This reaction can cause a narrowing (stenosis) that makes it difficult for blood to flow or completely interrupts blood flow. When this occurs, the tissues and organs irrigated by the inflamed vessels stop receiving the blood necessary for their survival.
