In this research, the independent variable consisted of: the type of movie married couples were shown: a violent or non-violent one. 

An independent variable (IV) is a variable that is manipulated by a researcher to investigate whether it has an outcome on and results in subsequent behavior- here, how entertained and amused couples are when watching the comedy skit. Basically, the researcher is manipulating the IV (type of movie) to see whether it has an effect on the dependent variable- the couple's sense of humor.

That is why the name of the term is independent because it does not depend on any other variables in the experiment or research. The independent can only be changed and controlled by the experimenter or researcher themselves.  

 

Meanwhile, the dependent variable is the variable that is dependent on the independent variables. Because of the independent variables, the dependent variables might show or not shown.

 

There are usually only one or two independent variables that are included in one research because too many variables can influence the final results. It will make the experiment not clear and precise. There are usually several dependent variables, though.  

 

Manipulating the independent variables might end up in a result where it’s influencing many different things. So, there can be a lot of dependent variables in research. The term independent variable itself can be confusing. Many people assume that the independent variable is free of any manipulation. Independent variable is isolated from other factors, so the manipulation can have analyzable results.
