During Andrew Jackson's presidency, there were many changes taking place in the country. The US was continuing to expand westward, as our goal was to fulfill our manifest destiny. Manifest destiny is the idea that it is America's god -given right to control all land from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Andrew Jackson helped to aid this cause by creating the Indian Removal Act. In this act, president Jackson forced Cherokee Indians to move west of the Mississippi River so that the United States government could take control of their land that was part of states in the southern part of the US. This resulted in Cherokee Indians being forced to move to Oklahoma, which was over a thousand miles away from their place of birth.
Along with this, Jackson was responsible for creating the spoils system in the federal government. This system rewarded Jackson's allies who helped him win the presidential election. Often viewed as corrupt, Jackson defended his actions by saying that he got rid of those people to start a "rotation in office." This rotation in office, he argued, would help to make sure that power does not stay in the hands of the same few people.
