The Articles of Confederation served as the first Constitution of the United States. It was an arrangement among the 13 colonies of the United States. Came into force on 1st March 1781, the Articles of Confederation provided the national government with very limited powers.
The American colonies under the Articles of Confederation did not want to have an influential government due to the fear that the strong government may establish tyranny as the British once had. Therefore, the Articles of Confederation did not provide the national government with adequate power such as to implement taxes, to enforce laws, issuing money etc.
