A species on which the survival of many other species depends is referred to as a C. keystone species. The contribution of keystone species to the ecosystem is so significant that without them, the entire ecosystem would be thrown out of balance. Keystone species are usually predators that help to control the population of primary consumers. An example of a keystone species are mountain lions.
