The gas contents of inhaled air and exhaled air are different because inhaled air is oxygen while exhaled air is carbon dioxide.

Inhaled air contains more oxygen and less carbon dioxide exahaled air. Exhaled air contains more carbon dioxide produced as a waste product of energy working together and less oxygen as it has been used in breathing.
