The dramatic increase for funding in math and science education in the U.S. came about primarily because of the Soviet launch of Sputnik 1. Under the Eisenhower administration, Americans were stunned when the Soviet Union launched the first human-made satellite in 1957. This made them wonder if they still held the lead in science. Congress passed the National Defense Education Act to improve school facilities and granted loans to college students.
