Franklin D. Roosevelt responded to the Great Depression by creating the New Deal. This policy was based on providing relief for citizens, reforming unstable systems (like the Stock Market), and helping American families recover financially. This New Deal resulted in the creation of several different federal agencies, known as the alphabet soup agencies.

These agencies helped to provide economic aid to elderly citizens (Social Security Act), provided jobs for young men in order to support their families (Conservation Civilian Corps), and helped provide economic relief to farmers (through the Agricultural Adjustment Act). These are just a few ways that the federal government got more involved in the American economy. His policies were extremely effective, as the unemployment rate decreased roughly 10% in his first term in office.
