The Carlisle Indian School had the motto of "Kill the Indian, Save the Man." This shows how the intent of this school was to make Native Americans act more like other American citizens. At these schools, students were mocked/harassed for speaking their own language, punished for practicing elements of their own culture,  and forced to dress like "normal" American citizens. These schools provided for traumatic experiences for Native Americans.
